The Football Field of Life

I was reading a couple of news articles on the Clemson football team and how they handled the “ups and downs” of losing the national championship one year, and returning the next year to win it. The Clemson coach established some guidelines to help the team achieve their goal. Some of those guidelines can be applied to us as we struggle on the big football field of life.

1. Don’t stop believing. Galatians 5:9, “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” We must never stop pursuing hope for the future. In 1 Peter 1:3-4, Peter points to a great inheritance reserved in heaven for us that nothing can tarnish or extinguish.

2. Look inside. We must strive to always look inside ourselves, examining ourselves in order to help others. Matthew 7:3-5 tells us that we should always look at ourselves first and not think of ourselves better than others. In Luke 23:34, Jesus on the cross said of the crowd around him, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.” The crowd failed to examine themselves. Jesus, on the other hand, forgave His enemies, gives a great example for us in how to treat others.

3. Love wins. In John 13:34, “A new commandment I give you, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” Jesus showed this new love for others (as well as you and me) by laying down His own life. The life that Jesus provides us is an eternal one if we will love and follow Him and His Teachings.

4. Live and Reinforce your values. We must persevere in following Jesus throughout our life in order to have eternal life. 1 Timothy 4:10, “For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people especially of those who believe.” The mission of the church is to show the love that Jesus talked about, helping guide those that are willing to seek God, and as Jude 21 says, “keep yourself in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.”
